MacTavish named Year of the Garden Hero

MOUNT FOREST – A member of the Mount Forest Horticultural Society was recognized for her gardening gusto at the organization’s annual general meeting on Oct. 13.  

The Canadian Garden Council has declared 2022 Year of the Garden nationwide.

Colette MacTavish was honoured as a Year of the Garden Hero of Canada. The award celebrates “outstanding people who inspire a love and passion for gardens and gardening,” society officials state

Ontario Horticultural  Association District 7 director Kathy Bouma presented MacTavish with a certificate and pin, acknowledging her involvement in every aspect of the organization. 

Christine Wasylyk, outgoing president of the local society noted MacTavish:

– is an unofficial “master gardener”;

– is a volunteer coordinator for the community flower beds;

– leads any dig when plants are offered by homeowners for the society’s annual plant sale;

– leads planting or pruning at the community beds;

-leads workshops on matters such as pruning;

– is a driving force behind the plant sale and homes and nurses  unsold plants;

– is a great ambassador for the society, recruiting new members who go to buy plants;

-compiles and finds advertisers for the society’s year book;

– updates the local society’s information on gardenontario.org; and 

– can fill in as a guest speaker on almost any topic.
