WELLINGTON CTY. - Local communities will be marking World Suicide Prevention Day held on Sept. 10 each year across the globe.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness, promote understanding about suicide, and highlight the importance of prevention activities.

Every day, people are struggling with physical and emotional challenges so overwhelming that they wonder if they can carry on.

Suicide is a reality and those who have lost loved ones often feel alone in their experience.

On Sept. 10 at 10am, designated communities across Wellington and Dufferin Counties will have an opportunity to remember loved ones who have died by suicide, as well as celebrate in the hope of suicide prevention.

A community planning committee, supported by the Suicide Resource Group and Community Torchlight have been working to create a simple, meaningful experience - simultaneously at four different locations.

- Guelph, The Boathouse, 84 Gordon Street;

- Fergus, Trellis Garden, 234 St. Patrick Street East;

- Mount Forest, New Growth Family Centre, 211 Birmingham Street West; and

- Orangeville, Alexandra Park, Corner of Second Street and First Avenue.

The committee’s slogan Remembering…Planting Hope symbolizes the event where people will gather, receive a package of seeds, and be together for a short program in remembrance and hope.

The hope lies in increased knowledge about suicide, our compassion about individual struggles and knowing where a person can get help.
