Linton upset with Target closure, vows to support local workers

Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton is concerned about the impact the closure of the Fergus Target store will have on the local community.

On Jan. 19 following council’s committee of the whole meeting, the mayor was asked for comment on the recent announcement of the impending closure of Target stores throughout Canada – including the Fergus location.

“It’s unfortunate when a huge company like that decides to close up shop,” said Linton. He noted the ribbon cutting for the store’s opening was held in 2013.

“It was a really quick decision and took a lot of people by surprise,” said Linton.

He explained he was contacted by Employment Ontario, whose representatives  intend to be on site and talk to Target Canada officials regarding adjustment strategies for workers.

Linton said he intends to keep the community informed on any developments.

“As a small municipality we are the small fish here regarding a major corporate decision,” he said.

“We’re not happy with it, but we have to roll with it and as much as possible support the people who are going to be negatively impacted by this.”
