Kinsmen Club cancels Coins for Change event

The Fergus & District Kinsmen and Centre Wellington Kinettes had planned to host a Coins for Change – The Next Generation on May 4 and 5, a fundraiser that would see thousands of pennies and other coins spread across the floor of the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in a world record attempt.

The event challenge was cancelled due to the organization’s inability to secure the purchase of the millions of pennies that have been taken out of circulation.

Once the pennies have been turned in at the banks, they are no longer legal tender. Groups like the Kinsmen and Kinettes can no longer purchase pennies.

Organizers said, in a press release, that the clubs appreciated the support from the communities and will forward any proceeds already collected to the Groves Hospital Foundation, Elma and David Jack Youth Recreational Fund and Cystic Fibrosis Canada, the intended recipients of the group’s efforts.
