Interfaith speakers focus on millennium development

MP Michael Chong, MP met with local religious representatives from the Anglican, Baha’i, Unitarian and Sikh faith communities of Wellington-Halton Hills here recently as they expressed concerns about Canada’s commitments to three millennium development goals.

Those are to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, ensure environmental sustainability and to invest in peace.

Participants listened to presentations on global poverty, halting climate change and investing in peace by local faith communities.

Chong told participants that given the progress at the 10 year mark it was unlikely the G8 would achieve the goals set in 2000 by 2015. With that assessment, Chong spoke of the need to rethink what has been done so far and what remains to be done to achieve the goals rather than plan for further goals. He spoke of the accountability report that was presented to the G8 and G20 leaders.
