Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has been designated “Baby-Friendly,” becoming the ninth health unit of the 36 in Ontario to achieve this status.

The Baby-Friendly Initiative is an international program that recognizes hospitals and community health services that take steps to continuously improve the information and care that women and their families receive during pregnancy and after baby’s birth.

The initiative ensures women receive accurate information to make an informed decision about how they will feed their babies.

“In Wellington, Dufferin, and Guelph breastfeeding rates are on the rise,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health.

To be certified as Baby-Friendly, a hospital or health centre does not accept free breastmilk substitutes, resources or supplies.
