Guelph mother charged with abandoning child

GUELPH – A Guelph woman was arrested last weekend after her young daughter was found wandering the halls of their apartment building.

Guelph Police officials say officers were called just after 11am on Feb. 5 to an apartment building in the city’s west end after the superintendent observed a four-year-old girl wandering alone on two different floors.

“Officers attended the child’s home and determined it was not a safe living environment, with garbage and evidence of drug use throughout the unit,” police stated in a press release.

“Investigation determined the child had been alone since at least 3am. During the more than two hours police were on scene no adult attended to check on the child, who was apprehended by Family and Children’s Services.”

A 36-year-old Guelph woman was charged with abandoning a child and failing to provide the necessities of life to a child. She is to appear in Guelph court on March 6.
