Guelph Humane Society releases impact report

GUELPH  – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) released its 2024 annual impact report highlighting the organizations contributions to animal welfare in Guelph, Wellington County and surrounding areas.

Last year marked the first year of the GHS 2024 to 2027 strategic plan focusing on “advancing animal welfare through responsive care and community engagement”.

According to the report, in 2024 GHS provided lifesaving medical care, shelter, and comfort to 3,346 animals. The organization also provided 2,279 days of no-cost boarding for pets of families in need.

Last year, 896 animals were adopted out to their forever homes, 586 cats, 181 dogs, 106 small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) and 21 farm animals.

When it comes to those who already had homes but were just a little lost, 20 per cent of stray cats were reunited with their families – an improvement from 17% in 2023 – and 66% of stray dogs made their way home as well,  fewer than in previous years (76% in 2023 and 83% in 2022).

The number of puppies seen by GHS surged 83% from 2023.

However the organization wasn’t limited to the average house pets. GHS serviced 1,867 wild animals including 392 rabbits. According to the report, GHS saw 71 species come through its doors, including a juvenile bald eagle that had been hit by a car.

The report also highlighted the abundance of community support received which included more than 400 volunteers donating a collective average of 608 hours each month.
