ROCKWOOD – Wellington County, through Guelph/Eramosa Township, has announced $1 million in funding for the expansion of Squires Lodge in Rockwood.

The cheque was presented by Mayor/Warden Chris White and members of township council to the board of directors of the Eramosa Non-Profit Housing Corporation.

Located at 160 Guelph St., the project will add 23 new residential units, a common room and enhanced green spaces, helping meet  growing demand for affordable senior housing while allowing residents to stay connected to their community, officials stated in a June 23 press release.

“This exciting expansion of Squires Lodge represents an important investment in our community and our seniors,” stated White in the release.

Squires Lodge is an affordable senior’s housing facility providing independent living apartments for adults aged 65 and over.

There are 80 people on the waiting list for a one-bedroom unit and 15 people on a waiting list for a two-bedroom unit.

“This project will allow seniors in the community to live in their neighbourhood close to their friends and family,” White stated.

The county funding was initially part of $7 million set aside for a now-cancelled Continuum of Care project in Aboyne, which was to house as many as 400 people.

When that project fell through, the county opted to divvy the funds up between its seven lower-tier municipalities to support affordable housing.
