Groups warn of electricity bill scams

Ontarians lose tens of thousands of dollars to phone scams related to their electricity bills every year.

For Fraud Prevention Month, the Electricity Distributors Association and Centre Wellington Hydro are helping electricity consumers  avoid becoming a victim of electricity bill phone fraud.

If you receive a phone call from someone threatening to disconnect your electrical service if you do not immediately pay by pre-paid credit card, say no and hang up, the organizations advise. Do not give any personal or financial information. Report the incident to the customer service department at 519-843-2900 and the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

“Let’s put an end to electricity bill phone scams,” officials stated in a press release.
