Groups offering new six-part education series on dementia

The Alzheimer Society’s Waterloo Wellington (ASWW) branch is now offering area residents a chance to borrow a new six-part education series on dementia.

The six DVD films are available from the society as well as East Wellington Community Services (EWCS), and the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence (SCE) in Drayton.

A grant from the Guelph Community Foundation to the Alzheimer Society funded the creation of six DVDs that can be watched as a series, or on an individual basis.

The films range in length from 35 to 47 minutes and the topics include Overview of Dementia, Brain Changes, Communication, Approach, Responsive Behaviour, and Caregiving.

The Guelph Community Foundation grant has supported the Alzheimer Society’s commitment to serving both the urban and rural people within the Guelph-Wellington area, officials state in a press release.

“Because caregivers are not always able to leave home to attend education sessions, or are working and unable to participate at the times workshops are offered, the films were made to allow people to watch as it suited them,” officials said.

“People can pick the time that works best for their situation, the topic they want, and even have the opportunity to watch the film as often as they like. This project complements the recent addition of Alzheimer Society satellite office hours in Erin, Fergus-Elora, and Mount Forest, with Drayton next slated to open.”

The Alzheimer Society has collaborated with EWCS and The Seniors’ Centre for Excellence (SCE) on education projects in the past to support people living with dementia, and those who care for, or about them.

By housing a set of the films in Erin and Drayton as well as the Guelph Alzheimer Society office, officials hope to make the lending process very convenient, with minimal travel involved to access the films.

There is no charge to borrow any or all of the set.

Those interested in the films can call either Sherri Plourde (EWCS) at 519-833-0087, Helen Edwards (SCE) at 519-638-1000 or Lindsay Wilson (ASWW) at 519-836-7672.
