Grants help property owners decommission old wells
Grants are available to landowners in the Guelph area to decommission old private wells as part of a program to protect the sources of the city’s municipal drinking water supplies.
The grants are available to landowners in the Wellhead Protection Areas of the 19 City of Guelph wells inside the city and adjacent areas of Guelph-Eramosa and Puslinch Townships.
Old and unused private wells can become a pathway for contaminants to get from the surface to the aquifer supplying water to the municipal water system.
The Ontario drinking water stewardship program will provide a grant of up to $4,000 to a property owner to pay up to 80 per cent of the cost.
Most projects cost much less than the maximum.
Funding is limited.
