Forfar Street water tower taken down

The water tower that stood for years on Forfar Street has started to come down and the new tower on Gartshore Street is now fully operational.

When the old tower is finally removed, the township is unlikely to need the land on which it stood.

Township treasurer Wes Snarr said at committee of the whole on Nov. 14 there is room on the land for approximately two or three houses.

The land has frontage of 100 feet, and township planner Brett Salmon said it is already zoned for residential use. Old Fergus council had the right to build the tower on residentially-zoned lands.

At the rear of the property is the old railway line.

The vacant land will be turned over to the economic development committee to determine a use.

Economic development manager Dave Rushton said in an interview on Monday the committee will likely ask council to declare the land surplus early in the new year. After that, it will be sold.
