Centre Wellington Township council gave routine permission on Monday night for the Elora Fire Department to conduct is annual Muscular Dystrophy charity toll here on Sept. 26.

The Fergus and Elora Fire Departments have been doing tolls in their respective towns for years, raising much money for the fund. They must seek permission each year to block the road, and the township passes the needed bylaw.

Deputy-clerk Kerry O’Kane reported that last year, the department in Elora collected over $8,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

The department must also notify the county OPP and deal with paperwork for the Public Works department, and have insurance in favour of the township and the county.

But in Elora this year, there is construction in the area of the Metcalfe Street bridge, and that is going to make the toll just a little bit different. The bridge itself is being rebuilt, and so is the road up the hill. There are some changes to Water Street, and a roundabout is going to be built at Metcalfe and York Street.

“It’s going to be a busy place with all that construction,” predicted Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj.
