Fergus resident collecting Pennies for Poverty
Vaine, left, gives cheque to food bank executive director Curt McQueen.

FERGUS – Fergus resident Randy Vaine has been collecting pennies for several months – a campaign he calls Pennies for Poverty. With the penny out of circulation, they don’t do much but gather dust. Vaine has set up a table at Zehrs for three Saturdays and people dropped off their jars, cans, envelopes and bags of pennies. He collected more than $800 worth and recently dropped off $455 cheques to the Centre Wellington Food Bank and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

The campaign is still running. Anyone interested in donating pennies can contact Vaine at randyvaine@gmail.com.
