It’s an annual tradition where roads crews from across Wellington County can test their skills.

Brad Hutchinson, safety devices foreman for the County of Wellington’s roads division, explained the county’s truck “roadeo” competition is among both county and lower tier municipal staff.

In total, 35 drivers took part in this year’s event, held on April 24 at the Fergus Sportsplex.

“It tests their skills with a snowplow with attached wing,” Hutchinson said.

In addition, participants also take a written test and do a circle check inspection of a vehicle placed in the parking lot of the Sportsplex.

Hutchinson said the event, which is organized by the Wellington County Road Supervisors Association, has gone on for a number of years.

Hutchinson added a number of retirees were also on hand to offer assistance.

“It’s just an inter-county event to see who is the best,” he said.

This year, Wellington County employee Wolf Wietzke came in first with a score of 366 out of 400.

Next up, also with the county, was Chris Bolton (363).

In third was Dan Whetham from Wellington North (348).
