DARE program expands into Wellington County

This year the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program will be taught to grade 6 students in Erin, Puslinch and old Arthur township, by County OPP Constables Laura Gromeder, Mike Deboer, Pete Fowler, and Bob Bortolato.

The program began on March 3 and will run for 10 weeks as part of the grade 6 curriculum. There are nine lessons that will focus on:

– accurate information about drug, and alcohol abuse;

– tobacco use;

– positive alternatives to substance abuse and violent behaviour;

– recognizing peer pressure;

– friendship; and

– the role of advertising

The 10th week involves a graduation ceremony for the students. Families are encouraged to attend and recognize their children’s accomplishments.

The DARE program is sponsored by the local Erin, Puslinch, and Arthur Optimist Clubs. For more information on the DARE program becoming a part of other communities, contact Bortolato at 519-856-1506.
