WDGPH reporting weekly increases in active COVID-19 cases

WELLINGTON COUNTY – COVID-19 cases continue rising in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region.

There are 153 confirmed active cases in the region as of July 6, up 29.6% from 118 cases on June 29.

A trend of declining cases since late April began reversing mid-June, when the number of active cases started increasing week-over-week.

On June 15, there were 88 actives cases reported. A week later, on June 22, 94 cases were reported; followed by 118 cases on June 29, representing a 34% increase in cases from mid- to late-June.

In Wellington County, there are 34 known active cases as of Wednesday. In Dufferin County there are 30 actives cases, and 85 in Guelph – increases across the board.

Hospitalizations

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the region doubled throughout June, from five on May 31 to at least 10 as of June 29 (none in an ICU).

The Advertiser found there were nine COVID patients at Guelph General Hospital, and a single patient between the three hospitals in Fergus, Mount Forest and Palmerston (officials would not say which site has the patient).

The newspaper did not hear back from officials with Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville about COVID-19 patients there.

Hospitalization data has not been publicly updated by WDGPH since May 31.

Vaccinations

As of July 6, across the WDGPH region there were 157,930 residents (59.6% of those 12 and older) who received at least three vaccine doses and 258,247 people (88.9% of those five and older) who received two doses, and 7,372 who received a single dose.
