County to pay tuition of up to $10,000 for staff

County council approved an administration, finance and personnel committee recommendation on Feb. 26 to pay tuition of up to $10,000 for staff.

Councillor Lou Maieron asked what the old limit for tuition costs was.

Committee chairman John Green said it was $5,000 but it had been at that level for some time.

Maieron said he could understand if the money is used to retrain someone, but he questioned paying for staff who simply want to upgrade their skills and then possibly move on.

Green referred that question to Human Resources director Andrea Lawson. She explained that there are “very specific criteria” for the tuition payments.

She noted, for example, someone who wants to increase skills, to become a caseworker for Ontario Works, will have tuition covered.

However, she added that if they leave the organization within 6 months, one year, or 18 months, they will have to reimburse the county for a percentage of that tuition cost.
