County Historical Society holding annual writing contest

The Wellington County Historical Society has launched its annual writing competition.

This year’s theme is My School Days.

The competition offers opportunities to reminisce about school day experiences, perhaps a favourite subject, a memory of schoolmates or an influential teacher.

The competition is open to all ages with awards presented in youth and adult categories. The top stories will also be considered for publication in Volume 26 of Wellington County History.

“Running since 1933, this competition provides an opportunity for young and old to retell and reflect upon their personal experiences. The stories provide a special glimpse into life in Wellington County and also serve as valuable primary sources for researchers and historians,” said Steve Revell, member of the executive board.

All entries become the property of the society, and will be deposited in the Wellington County Museum and Archives for use by future researchers

The requirements for the competition are:

– stories should be 500 to 2,000 words long;

– typed and double spaced;

– include with the author’s name, full address and telephone number; and

– mail entries to: 2012 Writing Competition, Wellington County Historical Society, P.O. Box 5, Fergus ON N1M 2W7

The deadline for submission is April 17.

Winners will be announced at the annual general meeting on June 4 at which time awards will be presented. For more information call 519-787-7069.
