Council approves Alma hall agreement
It is not often a councillor calls for a recorded vote because of the significance of the decision, but that is exactly what happened at Mapleton’s last meeting in May.
Councillor Mike Downey requested the recorded vote because he felt a bylaw, which approves an agreement between the township and the Optimist Club of Alma, is an “historic” one.
The agreement will “facilitate the operation and management” of a new community hall at Wallace Cumming Park in Alma for an original term of 20 years, with 10-year renewal periods thereafter.
Under the agreement the township will be responsible for major repairs, including those to plumbing, septic, well and electrical systems, furnace, insulation, roof, windows, outside painting and pointing, and structural repairs.
The township will also contribute a minimum of $10,000 per year to a capital reserve account, which will be earmarked for future maintenance.
The club will be responsible for “routine maintenance” and “minor repairs,” janitorial services, utilities, and ensuring adherence to the township’s alcohol policy.
A management committee will be formed to oversee the day-to-day operation of the hall. It will consist of three township representatives (two elected and a public works representative), two individuals from the Alma community, and four representatives of the Optimist Club.
Council unanimously passed the bylaw approving the new agreement.
