Closing a chapter in towns history

Acton Baptist Church will close its doors on Sept. 25, having served the community for 169 years.

The decision to close the doors of the landmark church – a listed heritage building – was not taken lightly.

But the reality is membership numbers have been in significant decline for several years, despite newcomers joining, and the church has been without a pastor for about a year.

In addition, the historic building is increasingly more expensive to heat and maintain. Officials said it is difficult to carry out the structural changes needed to make the building more accessible, and to accommodate the kinds of activities and programs that are typical of vibrant churches today.

And so, the members of Acton Baptist Church have concluded it is time to close the doors of the church.

Though the life of Acton Baptist Church has come to an end, officials say the community and faith of Christ’s followers in Acton are very much alive.
