A fifth case of measles has been confirmed here.

“We are asking for help from the entire community to stop the spread of this illness. You can protect yourself and your family by reviewing this information,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health last week.

The signs and symptoms of measles are: symptoms similar to a cold; fever; runny nose;  cough; eyes sensitive to light; and the lining of the mouth has small, irregular red spots with a bluish, white speck in the centre. Three to five days later a blotchy rash appears around the ears and face. The rash then spreads to the rest of the body.

Health officials urge people to stay home if they are sick.

People with symptoms of measles should call their doctor’s to make an appointment.

If anyone has chosen not to immunize their children, be aware that in the event of an outbreak, the child will be excluded from school and licenced child care for 21 days.
