Charges may be laid after retirement home fire

On Dec. 1 at around 8:25pm, Wellington North firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at Birmingham Retirement Community in Mount Forest.

Heavy smoke was showing on the second floor of the east wing of the home, which is designated vulnerable occupancy, states a fire department press release.

About 40 residents from the east wing were evacuated.

Fire chief Dave Guilbault stated one resident was transported to Louise Marshall Hospital as a precaution.

Fire crews from Mount Forest, Arthur and Harriston responded. No other injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported. Damage is estimated at $5,000.

Charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act are pending against the property owner, states the release.
