Change the World Ontario Youth Challenge
The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI) is working with 19 volunteer centre's across Ontario to mark National Volunteer Week April 19 to 25 by providing high school students with an opportunity to get involved volunteering in the community.
The Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington will be providing a half day volunteer experience for high school students at various local community organizations. The types of group volunteer activities include, tree planting, gardening, yard maintenance, special event assistance, and collection for a local food bank.
Participating organizations include: Guelph Humane Society, Hillside Festival, The Elliott Community, Green Legacy tree nurseries, Faery Fest, Guelph Food Bank, Edgewood Camp and Conference Centre, Donkey Sanctuary, Guelph Community Health Centre, neighbourhood Groups and Playsense Activity Centre.
Students will meet at GCVI high school at 8am April 25 for welcome and registration. They will by transported by bus to their group volunteer opportunities at various community organizations in Guelph and Wellington County.
Students will return to GCVI high school at around 1pm for a free lunch and reflection on the day.
Students will gain six hours towards their 40 hour requirements for graduation. The province insists that to graduate, students must volunteer for 40 hours. The event is an opportunity for students to volunteer in groups with friends or school clubs, with transportation and free lunch provided.
