Champs

Fraberts Fresh Foods has received provincial recognition for all of its local food goodness.

Jackie Fraser and Derek Roberts received the provincial Local Food Champion Award on Nov. 15 from Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott.

The celebration featured Jackie and Derek laying out a spread of deliciously local food for all in attendance at Fraberts in the Fergus Marketplace.

Over the years buying local has become more and more a point of discussion. And at the same time it’s becoming more and more difficult in some ways.

Sometimes it’s just tricky. Recently, I was purchasing peppers from a chain grocery store and while the label said the vegetables were from Ontario the stickers weren’t so definitive. While Some did said Ontario, others said Mexico.

Luckily I’m a savvy shopper, at least when it comes to produce origin, thanks in large part to my buy local oriented parents (they bought local before it was in vogue). So I was paying attention and chose the local Ontario peppers, but others may not have caught the difference.

That’s why it’s great to have a location like Fraberts that’s provincially recognized for its attention to local food. Shoppers don’t have to worry about being tricked and they know they’re getting food that’s as local as possible.

Congratulations, Jackie and Derek.

The Wendy’s in south Fergus has been open for almost two weeks now. Hey, better late than never.

When I wrote a few months ago that this restaurant was coming to Fergus, I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm I heard in our newsroom. I’m embarrassed to say it, but I can count the number of times I’ve been to Wendy’s on one hand. Yep, not really my thing.

However, being newly reintroduced to beef, I thought I’d give it a try. And I must say I was impressed. Visiting the drive thru less than a week after the store opened was a treat. The line was short, the staff was efficient and friendly, and my chili and salad was delicious. I’ll definitely be going again.

Check out the latest restaurant in Fergus and see for yourself.
