Centre Wellington celebrates Culture Days

Sept. 26 to 28 Elora Fergus Tourism and the Township of Centre Wellington are inviting residents and visitors to take a trip around town with a culture passport in celebration of Culture Days.

Culture Days, a pan-Canadian celebration now in its fifth year, was created to recognize the contribution of culture to healthy vibrant communities. Centre Wellington is thrilled to be part of the celebrations for a third straight year.

Riding on the success of previous years, Elora Fergus Tourism has created the passport to encourage people to travel around Centre Wellington and enjoy the wonderful variety of culture in the community.

“This year’s culture passport is amazing,” reports Elizabeth Bender who is helping to coordinate Centre Wellington’s Culture Days.

“We are kicking off on Friday with the Taste of the Underground Railroad Festival at the Fergus Grand Theatre and ending with a Celtic tea party in the Elora Greenspace on Sunday. In between, the weekend is packed with events and locations – 18 stops in total involving 40 plus cultural groups, individuals and businesses.”

The concept of the culture passport is simple – pick up a passport, visit participating locations and events and have your passport stamped. Collect four or more stamps and you can enter to win one of many great prizes. All passport activities are free.

Many passport favourites have returned including the Elora Farmers Market, a play from the Elora Community Theatre, the Wellington Artist’s Gallery Kids Fest, Rural Romp Fall Tour and two Older Voices walking tours. The Sportsplex is also participating this year, along with three local libraries, the Elora Fergus Studio Tour, Fraberts Fresh Foods, the Elora Centre for the Arts and the Wellington County Museum and Archives.

Exciting new stops include blacksmith demonstrations at Rio Brava Ironworks, tours of Elora’s Victoria Crescent residential neighbourhood, puppetry activities with Puppets Elora, the Elora Art Safari, and a parade with the Fergus Pipe Band to the Kissing Stane (stone) in Fergus for the unveiling of a new bench and storyboard. Random acts of culture will also be happening throughout the weekend.

Participants may print their own passport or pick one up at the Elora Information Centre, Civic Centre, Sportsplex, Chamber of Commerce or at any culture passport location during the weekend.

Culture Days is a great time to discover something new and connect with cultural in Centre Wellington, organizers state.
