Cadet groups looking for new members

The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Ajax is made up of young men and women ages 12 to 19 has successfully operated the Navy League  Cadet Corps Achilles made up of young men and women ages 9 to 13.

Both groups are seeking new members.

The corps trains its members in a variety of skills. A Sea Cadet will learn leadership and instruction of peers, how to be a good citizen, physical fitness, responsibility and discipline. Also included in their training is seamanship and how to handle themselves in and around boats and the water, including power boat safety, operator courses, sailing and canoeing, as well as band training as an optional activity.

Cadets can take part in first aid courses, Sports and other areas of special interest. Those skills can be applied at various competitions all while learning the values of good Sportsmanship and citizenship. During the summer break there is sailing and canoeing on Guelph Lake.

The Sea Cadets also have an opportunity to apply for summer training courses across Canada at specialized cadet camps.

They are supplied with uniforms, training needs, and some funding for competitions and ceremonies by the Department of National Defence. The Navy League of Canada, Guelph Branch, supplies all other needs of the cadets, including the building as well as fully funding the Navy League Cadet Corps. There is no administration fee to join either organization and there is no cost to parents for uniforms, training and travel.

The Ajax unit meetings are on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30pm at The Ship, at 75 Cardigan Street. The Achilles group meets Friday evenings from 6:30 to 9pm at the same place.

The Navy League of Canada Guelph Branch was created in 1940 by a group of Guelph businessmen all volunteers.
