Birmingham announces launch of Senior Citizen of the Year Award

Birmingham Retirement Community wants to honour the seniors of Mount Forest and surrounding area with a Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

The awards ceremony and dinner will be held at Birmingham Retirement Community.

Leading up to that event will be an invitation to service clubs, organizations, churches and individuals to nominate someone they feel deserving of this title.

The criteria for nomination will be:

– 65 years and older and a resident of Mount Forest, Kenilworth or Holstein;

– makes an impact on their community; and

– volunteers time and talents for community betterment.

Although there are citizen of the year awards decided upon by the Chamber of Commerce, officials say it is important to acknowledge the influence of the senior population on the community and a good time to do that is in June – National Seniors Month.

Nomination forms will be sent to the various service groups and churches within the next few weeks.

They can also be picked up at Birmingham Retirement, 356 Birmingham St. E., between 9am and 5pm.

The deadline for sending in a nomination will be May 9, in order to give the award panel time to decide who best embodies today’s active seniors and to send out invitations.

The panel will be made up of Birmingham residents and staff.

The top five nominees and their nominators will be invited to a presentation dinner to be held on June 10.
