Bears cheerleading bring home first and second competition wins

Cheer On! Inc. owners Cyndi Guthrie and Kimberley Lees are thrilled to share the results of the Bears Cheerleading Club’s first competition.

At the Niagara Falls Festival Of Lights Competition on Dec. 5 and 6, participants home the following:

Gummy Bears (Tiny Team)    1st Place

Teddy Bears (Mini Team)    2nd Place

Panda Bears (Youth Team)    2nd Place

Kodiac Bears (Junior Team) 1st Place

This is the first season of the newly formed cheerleading group based in Centre Wellington.

Bears of all ages shared a bus and bonding experience to and from Niagara Falls, as well as while watching and competing with others from Ontario and New York.

Supportive parents also joined in on the fun cheering on the girls, taking in the many attractions at the falls, not to mention the excitement of 150 altogether for dinner at the fabulous Mick & Angelo’s restaurant. It was hard to tell who was cheering more, the girls themselves or the proud parents and coaches. With more than 39 girls at the competition, only three of them had prior experience.

Cheerleading has evolved from a side-line support activity to a year round competitive sport. All-star cheerleading involves gymnastics, dance, jumps and stunts all set to music in a 2 ½ min routine.

Athletes involved with Cheer On! Bears learn much more than just how to cheer. They are taught about leadership, respect, dedication, responsibility and teamwork.

As well as competing, the Bears have been involved in several community events such as the Halloween Monster March and the Elora Santa Claus Parade.

Currently there are 39 athletes, 6 coaches and 4 coaches in training practising at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus.

In January there are two “try-it” dates, where youth from the community can participate in an open practice to see if cheerleading is the right sport for them: Monday Jan. 4 and Thursday Jan. 7, from 6pm to 7pm for ages four to eight, and 7pm to 8:30pm for ages 9 – 18. There has been a lot of interest expressed for having a senior team (ages 15-18) and the club is hoping to see that realized in January.

Congratulations and a very heartfelt appreciation to all the Bears’ and their family members for an awesome accomplishment and sense of hometown pride.
