At the Library: County libraries offer radon detectors on loan

Did you know that you can borrow radon detectors from the Wellington County Library?

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when the uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It is invisible, odourless and tasteless.

When radon is released from the ground outdoors, it is diluted and is not a concern. However, in enclosed spaces like homes, it can sometimes accumulate to high levels, which can be a risk to your health.

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, but thankfully, reducing radon in your home is straight forward. The first step is figuring out if the radon levels in your home are higher than the guideline provided by Health Canada.

You can do this by visiting your local library branch and borrowing a radon detector for a three-week period, free of charge! Visit www.healthcanada.gc.ca/radon or call 1.866.225.0709 for more information on radon, or www.wellington.ca/library to place a hold on a radon detector today!

Beyond our collections, we also have free programming for all ages. See below for a list of some of our highlights this month, or visit www.wellington.ca/LibraryCalendar for a full list of programing and to register online.
