Another fire destroys house, sends homeowner to hospital

Another house is destroyed and the homeowner sent to hospital after a fire raged in the early morning hours of Jan. 27.

Eleven trucks from the Erin, Hillsburgh and Rockwood fire stations responded to a structure fire on 1st Line at around 3am, after a call from a neighbour alerted them to the blaze.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found a fully-involved house fire.

Erin Fire Chief Dan Callaghan said the homeowner was out of the house by the time the fire department got there, but was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

He added the homeowner was alerted by smoke detectors.

Callaghan said the suspected cause of the fire is improper disposal of ashes from a fire place.

“The house is destroyed. We’re saying $500,000 (damage),” he added.

This is the third house fire within a week in Wellington County, and the second that completely destroyed a home.
