All-Ontario Midget softball champs to reunite in Harriston on Aug. 12

Historical society hosting display at library

HARRISTON – Members of a team that played a major role in local sports history will gather for a reunion here during the town’s annual street party celebration.

The Harriston Historical Society of is presenting a display in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Harriston Midget team that won both the Western Ontario Athletic Association and Ontario Amateur Softball Association championships during the 1963 season.

After dining together at a local restaurant, members of the team will greet visitors to the display, which will be held on the top floor of the Harriston library from 2 to 4pm on Aug. 12.

Visitors are invited to reflect on the team’s achievements and view items in the display, as well as meeting about eight members of the team expected to attend the event.

One of those team members was former Mapleton mayor Bruce Whale, who recalls it being a pretty “intimidating” experience to go up against teams from much larger centres enroute to the All-Ontario championship.
