CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Centre Wellington Singers is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
In September 1996, about 25 musically inclined folk, two of whom are still in the choir, answered the call of Carol McFadden, an organist and music teacher in Elora.
McFadden had the vision to create a community-based choir.
Since then the choir has grown under six directors:
– McFadden;
– Kevin Bieman;
– Louise Elder;
– Emily Petrenko;
– Jurgen Petrenko; and
– Melanie Steenburgh.
Today, 50 to 70 singers come out every week to experience the fellowship and joy of singing together, officials say.
After a sell-out Christmas concert, their new season begins in January.
“Our numbers fluctuate season to season depending on the schedules of our members,” says board secretary Sue FitzGerald. “We always welcome new members, and encourage anyone to come and give it a try.”
The choir particularly needs male voices to round out their sound.
“I don’t know why, but getting men to join a choir is always a challenge, but it’s so uplifting and a great way to meet new people and learn and laugh together,” FitzGerald added. “If you can carry a tune, we’d love to meet you.”
To celebrate the 30th anniversary, the spring session features all Canadian songs from artists such as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen as well as Un Canadien Errant, I’se the By, Good Old Hockey Game and more.
Registration nights for the next session are Jan. 6 and 13 starting at 6:15pm Hope Springs United Church in Elora.
Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening from 7:15pm at the church.
The Centre Wellington Singers spring concert slated for April 25 will feature musical guests.
