Local man collects 300 pounds of pop can tabs for Legion, Guelph Giants

PONSONBY – Eric Huber does a lot of collecting in his retirement – items he delivers to charities, items for international relief efforts – and pop can tabs he sells to a scrap yard, dividing the cash between the Elora Legion and the Guelph Giants.

On Dec. 5 he brought his haul to the Advertiser for a photo – nine bags of the tabs weighing in at more than 300 pounds.

For the past three years, the Guelph Storm, in conjunction with the Sleeman Centre, sponsored a pop tab  competition.

On one night, folks could bring in their haul, have it weighed and the top two contestants would win prize money to donate to their charity of choice.

Huber has competed for the last three years, placing third in 2024.

The contest has since  been put on hold, but that hasn’t stopped Huber.

He made a deal with SCS Metals Limited, the metal scrap yard just outside Fergus, which is adding a few cents extra per pound.

Huber is then delivering the cash to the Elora Legion, which uses the funds to purchase wheelchairs and walkers, then loaned out.

The other half of the cash goes to the Guelph Giants, a hockey team for players with intellectual disabilities.

Anyone with a quantity of pop can tabs to donate can call Huber at 519-766-4656.
