Centre Wellington District High School hosts Special Olympics basketball tournament

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Students from area high schools gathered at Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS) on Nov. 20 to compete at a Special Olympics basketball tournament. Five different courts were in play in the CWDHS gym, along with a special skills area. Norwell District Secondary School (DSS), Centre Dufferin DSS, Westside SS, Orangeville DSS, Wellington Heights SS and CWDHS all had athletes in competition. “Special Olympics events play a vital role in fostering inclusive environments where acceptance and respect are central, and every athlete’s abilities are celebrated,” said UGDSB principal of special education and accessibility April King. “These events provide a meaningful opportunity for all athletes to be themselves while strengthening connections among students, staff, and families through shared pride. Beyond the day’s activities, they help cultivate a school culture rooted in empathy, belonging and community engagement.”
