Guelph General Hospital wins award for organ donation rates

GUELPH – Guelph General Hospital (GGH) has more awards from the Trillium Gift of Life Network to place on its trophy shelf.

In 2024/25, GGH supported three organ donors, which led to 12 organs donated for transplant, saving eight lives.

Additionally, there were 23 tissue donors, significantly improving the quality of life for numerous recipients.

In a press release, chief nursing executive Andrea Lucas expressed pride and gratitude to the organ donor team at the hospital.

“These conversations and the decisions that follow are never easy,” said Lucas.

“I’m deeply grateful each time someone makes the courageous decision to offer the gift of renewed health to others and for the exceptional care our team provides during these difficult moments.”

GGH received:

– two Awards of Excellence for meeting or exceeding provincial targets for four or more consecutive years;

– the Provincial Conversion Rate Award for exceeding the provincial target of 63 per cent (GGH achieved 100%). The conversion rate is the percentage of potential organ donors who went on to become actual donors; and

– the Provincial Eligible Approach Rate Award for exceeding the provincial target of 90% (GGH achieved 100%). This award recognizes hospitals who facilitate a donation discussion with eligible patients and families.

“This year’s record level of recognition is a testament to the dedicated, patient-centred care provided by Guelph General Hospital’s health care team as they honour and support the decisions of patients and their families to donate,” said Janet MacLean, interim vice-president, Trillium Gift of Life Network.

“It also reflects the deep commitment of Ontario hospitals to fostering a culture where organ and tissue donation is a natural and meaningful part of end-of-life care.”
