Hubert arrived in Halifax from Holland on the Princess Irene on March 1, 1952, beginning a new chapter of his life. Hubert worked in Halifax for 3 years before going back to Holland to reunite with the love of his life Marie. This marked Hubert’s first plane ride that held 90 passengers. At that time his boat ticket cost $500.00 while his plane ticket cost him $521.00. Hubert and Marie got married in 1955 and decided to return to Canada where they landed in Quebec where Hubert worked at a dairy farm there for a little bit before moving to Newmarket to farm and to start their family of six children. Hubert bought a farm in Rockwood but would travel back and forth from Newmarket and Rockwood to farm both farms eventually leaving Newmarket behind and concentrating on Rockwood where he worked day and night to provide for his family during hard times. Hubert loved talking about past stories and especially his time he served in the Indonesian War. He proudly served 2 ½ years for the last part of the war. (1945-1949), an experience that shaped his strength and determined personality, but above all farming was Hubert’s greatest pride and joy, he would take part in it right up to the end of his years even at 98 he would go out to the fields to see if the hay was ready. As per Hubert’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held in the near future. Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oustic.
