A woman of ordinary circumstances who lived an extraordinary life full of laughter and adventure with family and friends at its core, Leslie grew up in Peterborough, where she met and married her high-school love, Steve. Beginning with a move to Montreal at 8-months pregnant, that lifelong love took her across the country and around the world. In 11 cities, 4 countries, 3 continents, and several winters in Mexico, she carried and recreated home wherever she lived, making lasting connections, crazy stories, and a warm welcome for new neighbours and old friends, friends’ kids, and kids’ friends. As a teacher and long-time volunteer, she shared her passion for learning and the arts to make the world a little brighter for her community. She especially loved kids and they loved “Mama Les.” Quick with a smile and a hug and a laugh that sparkled and engaged, there was always more room at her table. She also loved to travel, especially a good road trip, and took every opportunity to keep family close. Fastidious and resilient with a fierce independent streak, sometimes fretful, sometimes feisty, she adamantly sought out joy every day – in books, music, her gardens, and the experiences and accomplishments of all around her. Her six grandchildren were her ultimate joy, and she felt blessed to be so close to them these past five years in BC. Predeceased by parents Ray & Marjorie Parnell and sister Susan, Les is deeply loved and forever missed by Steve, Jill, Darryn & Janet, Trevor & Robyn, Angela & John, Cale, Cleo, Tanner, Jaema, Owen, and Josephine, and the many family and friends who shared in her joy. Special thanks to the Chemotherapy unit at Cowichan District Hospital and the Oncology and Radiation departments at Royal Jubilee Hospital for the care that helped ease her way through the diagnoses and treatments she endured for two years. Celebrations of Life will take place 1-4pm Nov. 1, at the family home, 484 Thetis Dr, Ladysmith, BC, and 12-3pm Nov. 22 at the Peterborough (ON) Curling Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cowichan District Hospital Foundation in Leslie’s name and directed to the Chemotherapy unit (250-701-0399; cdhfoundation.ca).
