McKINNELL, Ross

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Ross McKinnell, age 89 years, on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Beloved husband of Carol McKinnell (nee Krick). Loving father of Jane Cunnington, Joan McKinnell (Bruce Gaily) and John McKinnell (Jennifer). Cherished grandfather of Blake Cunnington, Ryley Cunnington, Rhys McKinnell and Grady McKinnell. Survived by his brother Murray, sisters-in-law Joanne McKinnell and Muriel McLeod. Predeceased by his brother Jerry, sisters-in-law Donna McKinnell and Evelyn Sauers, brothers-in-law Larry Sauers and Bob McLeod. As a teenager growing up in Hamilton, Ross saved enough money to buy his dream racing bicycle and began competing across Ontario, Quebec, New York State and Europe. His ultimate achievement was earning a spot on Team Canada in the 1958 British Empire Games. After Ross’ cycling career ended, he focused on his career at International Harvester as Territory Manager. During this time, he met the love of his life, Carol and they were married and moved to Guelph. In 1966, Ross had the opportunity to partner with Fred Rinehart to form Rinehart and McKinnell Farm Equipment (later McKinnell Farm Equipment Ltd.). After 27 years, McKinnell Farm Equipment Ltd. was closed, and Ross began a new chapter with semi-retirement. Ross spent his time curling, golfing, bike riding and travelling with Carol. Ross also joined Bryan’s Farm & Industrial Supply as a buyer and worked there for 28 years until he was 85 and decided to switch to full time retirement. Ross was a strong believer in community and served over 55 years in Kiwanis. He was an active member of Trinity United Church. He was also involved in the Tour de Guelph raising over $60,000 as of June 2025. The family wish to thank his friends and neighbours who helped him remain independent in his home. The McKinnell family will receive relatives and friends at the Brombal Funeral Home, 1 Delhi Street, Guelph on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 2:00 – 4:00pm & 7:00 – 9:00pm.
