BRUCEDALE – A Guelph/Eramosa councillor is concerned about potential parking problems at the new Bonarrow subdivision in Rockwood, located off Wellington Road 27.
The township took over responsibility this month for maintenance on the property, such as plowing and looking after sidewalks.
“Parking is a nightmare in this subdivision,” said councillor Corey Woods at an Aug. 11 council meeting.
“The driveways aren’t big enough, the cars are overhanging into the sidewalks, into the roadway — there’s cars on both sides,” he said.
Woods said he’s chiefly worried about safety.
“Driving through the subdivision, it’s like Russian Roulette: Are you going to hit somebody, are you going to kill a kid?”
Public works director Harry Niemi told council there are currently no parking bans on streets within the subdivision, as there are in other areas of the township.
“Some view parking on both sides of the street as a bit of traffic calming. It slows cars down, it doesn’t provide a free lane for people to go through,” said Niemi.
“We’re never going to please everybody; our job is just to make sure it’s safe,” he added.
Niemi said the township could allow residents to seek parking restrictions in the subdivision if there is group consensus.
That option will later be brought to council through a bylaw.
