Community partners join up to improve Elora Green Space

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Work has been ongoing in the Elora Green Space over the past several months, including art installations, new chairs and an overall enhancement of the space.

“Having community partners come together to enhance the Elora Green Space is a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together with a shared vision,” stated Mayor Shawn Watters. “The collaborative effort not only enriches the natural beauty of the area but also deepens its cultural significance for generations to come.”

The Tall Man

The Stephanie Minarovich Green Space Fund (SMGSF) is covering costs to restore the sculpture A Question of Who’s in Charge by Scott A. McNichol (also known as the Tall Man).

Kat Florence Canada offered a secure location for the restoration work and the sculpture was removed on Oct. 28, with McNichol completing the restoration work throughout the winter.

The Tall Man was reinstalled on June 30.

Additions to the Tall Man were made to protect it, such as stilts to raise it.

The sculpture still requires on-site repairs and the township is working with the artist to get these repairs completed this month.

More plants will be added around the base.

Kat Florence Canada donated $38,022 to install:

– stone steps;

– a yew hedge;

– flagstone for improved seating area and garbage can placement; and

– sod and turf repairs.

Muskoka chairs were donated by the Elora Home Hardware as the previous chairs, also donated by Elora Home Hardware, needed an upgrade.

The SMGSF installed a pond water feature years ago but it wasn’t functioning as expected and had to be removed.

In its place, a statue Mo, the Moose Fawn by Frank Ripley was purchased by the SMGSF and it will soon be installed in the space.

The sculpture stands five  feet tall and is made from repurposed metal and found objects.

Plaques will be installed to recognize the various donations.
