Council awards $139,000 tender for emergency culvert replacement

BRUCEDALE – Guelph/Eramosa council has awarded a tender for $139,399 (before tax) to Cox Construction for an emergency culvert replacement on Conservation Road.

The tender was awarded at the June 9 meeting.

The culvert needed replacement following heavy rain on April 2.

Township staff was made aware of the failure of a large culvert structure on Conservation Road just west of Wellington Road 38.

A partial blockage as well as the influx of water caused the loss of the entire shoulder to the edge of asphalt.

The town sent out four requests for bids, with three companies responding.

Cox Construction bid $139,399, Capital Paving bid $173,000 and Dexler Construction bid $232,244. J.G. Goetz Construction did not bid.

In addition to the bid price, the culvert sections, couplers and elbows were pre-ordered at a cost of $29,042. The construction cost of the repair is therefore $168,441 (before tax). The bid price includes the additional of required roadside safety elements in the form a steel bean guiderail and end treatments due to inadequate clear zone and depth to watercourse below the shoulder.

Including soft costs for survey, engineering, geotechnical, permits and contractor administration and inspection as well as the non-recoverable HST, the total project cost is estimated at $220,000.

Funding for the project will be taken from the working fund reserve.
