Age 80, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at Guelph General Hospital. Born on March 29, 1945, in Guelph, John was a gentle soul who found joy in life’s simple pleasures—quiet moments, the beauty of nature, and the companionship of animals. A man of few words but deep thoughts, he was known for his steady presence, quiet strength, and kind heart. John shared more than 54 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Judy, building a life rooted in love, patience, and unwavering support. Together, they raised two sons, Darrin and Ryan, and later welcomed the joy of five grandchildren into their lives—as well as a few special grand-dogs and cats. He spent 35 years working at the Acton Quarry and found great joy in time spent at the baseball diamond—whether playing the game he loved or cheering on his sons and grandchildren. Those moments brought him deep pride and happiness. John had a deep and abiding love for animals. Whether it was one of many neighbourhood dogs by his side or the wildlife in his backyard, he had a special connection to all creatures great and small. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his sons, Darrin (Jeanette) and Ryan (Heidi); and his cherished grandchildren: Keeley, Brinlee, Deacon, James, and Brock. He will also be missed by his sister, Dot (Ted) Jennings; brother, Art (Angie) Duffield; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Joe and Albert “Skip” Duffield. John’s life will be honoured on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Wall-Custance Funeral Home, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph. Visitation will take place from 1-2pm, with a memorial service and Celebration of Life to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or an Animal Rescue/Shelter of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com. Though he spoke softly, John’s love, wisdom, and quiet humor will echo forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. A tree will be planted in memory of John E. Duffield in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
