Area residents are encouraged to ‘build-a-butt’ to raise awareness about and screening.

Using imagination and creativity, they can ‘build-a-butt’ out of any material  – for example snow, clay, cake etc. - take a photo, and add a compelling story related to the impact of cancer or the importance of screening.

Three $500 gift cards will be awarded for the following categories:

- most Facebook ‘likes’ on the contest page;

- most compelling story (describing the impact of cancer, or cancer screening); and

- most creative butt.

“Colorectal cancer is a very serious health issue, especially when no one talks about their backsides, bottoms, butts - whatever you want to call it,” says Dr. Rachael Halligan, the regional primary care lead for the Waterloo Wellington regional cancer program.

“But when we start to talk about it, think about it, and participate in cancer screening, it can help. Colorectal cancer is 90 per cent curable when caught early.”

The Waterloo Wellington regional cancer program is  partnering with Erie St. Clair regional cancer program to offer the contest in both regions using a fun and creative way to increase awareness.

In Ontario, colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men and third most common cause of cancer deaths in women. Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable when found early. Cancer screening saves lives.

The deadline for submissions is March 19 and they can be sent to screeningcontest@wrh.on.ca or posted to the ‘build-a-butt’ contest Facebook page. For more details visit www.grhosp.on.ca/buildabutt.
