Women in Crisis hosting human trafficking event
GUELPH – In recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis (WIC) is hosting a free virtual event to raise awareness on local impacts and the actions that can be taken to stop exploitation and support survivors.
The panel discussion, “Unpacking the Impacts of Human Trafficking,” will take place online from 6 to 7:30pm on Feb. 22 and will feature community panelists sharing their expertise and perspectives.
Featured speakers include Kween of the Kween Company, Meaghan Duckett of This Space Belongs to You, Tamie Coleman Dell of the Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre, and Lavender, a trafficking survivor and advocate.
“It is estimated that 67% of police-reported human trafficking happens in Ontario,” states WIC public educator Jensen Williams in a press release. “While we may not want to think it’s happening here, the reality is that it’s impacting our community in Guelph-Wellington. “
Williams added, “The more we collectively know about this issue, the better equipped we are to be able to do something about it.”
