WEB ONLY: Public Health again has challenge to quit smoking

Was quitting smoking a New Year’s resolution?

Anyone needing a little more incentive can register for the 2009 Driven to Quit Challenge.

Register by midnight Feb. 28 and stay smoke-free for March to be eligible to win a Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, one of two $5,000 vacation getaways, or other great prizes.

The Driven to Quit Challenge is a health promotion campaign encouraging Ontario adults who are daily smokers or tobacco users to make a quitting attempt for March with the support of a buddy.

Since 2006, the challenge has helped more than 79,000 Ontarians to try to quit. Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health nurse Dora Eaglesham said, “Last year, we had a great response with 688 smokers taking the challenge in Wellington and Dufferin Counties.   Seventy-four-point-four per cent of quitters rated the challenge as important in motivating them to undertake a quit attempt.”

Quitting smoking takes planning and effort. There is  help from Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 or online at www.smokershelpline.ca.
