WEB ONLY: Group offers legal workshop for artists

Artists who find the legal aspects of managing their art careers are complicated and confusing will want to sign up for the Legal Issues Workshop being offered as a collaborative presentation of Guelph Arts Council and CARFAC Ontario, the association of professional visual and media artists.

The workshop is on Feb. 21 from 10:30am to 1:30pm at the Guelph Arts Council office.

The workshop will give artists a background in basic copyright law; approaches to copyright licencing; the benefits of using contracts in professional dealings; and tips for negotiating agreements that protect interests. Participants will also learn about ways to enforce and protect their legal rights should they encounter problems, such as small claims court.

Leading the workshop is Catherine Lovrics, lawyer and trademark agent and associate with Bereskin and Parr in Toronto. She has a law degree from the University of Ottawa, and has completed a course in international trademark law at John Marshall Law School.

Registration cost for the workshop is $25 for Guelph Arts Council or CARFAC Ontario members; $40 for non-members.

Space is limited so advance registration accompanied by payment to Guelph Arts Council will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information or to register for the workshop, contact Guelph Arts Council at 519-836-3280 or email  gac@sentex.net.  A registration form is also available online at guelpharts.ca/guelphartscouncil.
