Junior Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) students beat the board’s previous year’s results in the latest Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessments.
In the last school year WCDSB Grade 6 students scored 81 per cent in reading, 82% in writing and 64% in mathematics beating 2013/14 averages of 75%, 79% and 58% respectively.
“EQAO data is important for our school improvement planning as we respond to the needs of our learners,” said superintendent of education Mike Glazier in a press release.
“We are proud of the gains that have been made, especially in the reading and writing cohort data where it shows the percentage of students rising to the provincial standard in the junior assessment that had not met the standard in the primary assessment three years ago.”
EQAO is a standardized test that evaluates reading, writing and math for all primary (Grades 1 to 3) and junior (Grade 4 to 6) students in the province.
However, last year not all schools participated so there is no provincial average to compare with individual school or board results.
In the 2014/15 school year Grade 3 students in the WCDSB showed improvement in reading with the number of students earning the provincial standard reaching 69% compared to 68% the previous year.
However, in both writing and math the number of students meeting the standard in the 2014/15 year declined compared to 2013/14 with 72% of students meeting the standard in writing and 69% in math compared to 79% and 74% respectively the previous year.
“Our Catholic schools are committed to excellence and improving outcomes,” said director of education Tamara Nugent in a press release. “We are very proud of the academic achievement of our students and the increase in achievement results over time.
“We met our improvement targets in primary reading and junior math as a result of the focused work of our staff on success for all students.”
The EQAO results are used in the formation of long-term, system level priorities and learning supports.
“Our school principals and senior administration work with the data and supports, such as Student Achievement Officers, EQAO personnel, and school improvement plan teams, to review data and make informed decisions that lead to the best possible outcomes for our students,” Glazier said.
In both the primary and junior grades female students outperformed male students in achieving the provincial standard. In reading, 77% of female Grade 3 students reached the standard while 62% of males were successful. In writing, 81% of females were successful compared to 65% of males and in math females outperformed the makes 72% to 66%.
In Grade 6 the results were closer. In reading 83% of female students and 79% of male students reached the provincial standard. In writing 89% of the females were successful compared to 74% of males and in math 66% of females were successful compared to 61% of males.
