Water main will cost $23,000

Councillors here are in favour of installing an extra section of water main in Hillsburgh when the town completes upgrades to Anne,  Mill, and Church Streets.

The extra section, which will run from the back of the Hillsburgh community centre to the southeast corner of the Foodland parking lot on Trafalgar Road, will cost about $23,000.

“A hydrant would also be installed [near Foodland], greatly improving fire protection for Trafalgar Road,” water superintendent Frank Smedley said in his report to council.

Mayor Rod Finnie noted the hydrant could also help reduce insurance costs for businesses along Trafalgar.

Smedley said the extra section of water main would be “money well spent,” considering it would be cheaper than normal if combined with the town’s upgrades on the streets around the community centre.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the extra water main, subject to approval in the budget process.

Council was also expected to award the tender for the upgrades to Anne, Mill, and Church Streets on Feb. 16, but Roads Superintendent Larry Van Wyck told council staff is missing some information necessary to make the decision.

Council called a special meeting on Feb. 24 to award that tender. The results of that meeting were not known by press time.
